In-class Exercise: Developing a Short Questionnaire

Learning Objective: Be able to develop a short questionnaire and pay attention to key aspects like sequence, wording, and types of questions.
Time: 20 minutes
1. Choose a Topic: Select a simple topic of interest for the questionnaire. For example: customer satisfaction, study habits, or favorite social media platform
2. Define:
- Purpose of Data Collection: How will the data collected be used?
- Target Population: Who is your target population for this survey?
- Sampling: What is your planned sample size, and how did you determine it? How will you select participants to ensure your sample represents your target audience?
- Before Launching the Survey: What steps will you take before conducting the actual survey
3. Develop a questionnaire with 6-8 questions. Make sure to cover the following:
- Question Sequence: Begin with general questions and move to more specific ones. Ensure a logical flow that makes sense to the respondent.
- Wording of Questions: Use clear, concise, and neutral language. Avoid leading or biased questions.
- Types of Questions: Include at least three different types of questions & scales:
- Closed-Ended Questions (e.g., Yes/No, Multiple choice) Try to use the highest possible scale level when possible (e.g. ratio scale)
- Likert Scale Questions (e.g., Strongly agree to Strongly disagree)
- Open-Ended Questions (e.g., "What do you think about...?")
4. Guidelines for Question Creation:
- Clarity: Ensure all questions are clear and unambiguous.
- Brevity: Avoid long, complex questions.
- Relevance: Make sure all questions are relevant to your topic and objective.
- Neutrality: Phrase questions without leading the respondent towards a particular answer.
5. Deliverable: Submit your questionnaire incl. Topic and Definitions for discussion. Ensure it is neat, well-organized, and ready to be used for gathering data.
