Intercultural Competence for Nurse Educators is a course designed to equip you with the essential knowledge, skills and sensitivities necessary to effectively navigate the diverse cultural landscape within healthcare education and practice. Throughout this course, you’ll delve into the complexities of intercultural interactions, examining the impact of culture on patient care and collaboration among healthcare professionals. The course also offers you the opportunity to develop your critical thinking and, consequently, revisit your language and change the narratives on topics such as diversity and inclusion, bias and prejudice, microaggressions etc.

 Approach: experiential and discussion-based (e.g. self-reflection, case study analyses, debates) 

Focus: developing academic communication skills: reading, writing, intercultural awareness

Language of communication: English, CEF levels B2 – C1

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

1) Understand cultural diversity --> We’ll explore the concepts of culture, diversity and their significance in healthcare settings. We’ll analyse how cultural backgrounds influence beliefs, values and communication styles, affecting patient-nurse relationships and healthcare outcomes.

2) Enhance cultural sensitivity --> We’ll reflect on our own cultural biases and prejudice and use this to gain personal growth, by learning how to approach interactions with an open and empathetic mindset.

3) Foster culturally inclusive learning environments --> We’ll create culturally inclusive classrooms and clinical settings, by developing techniques meant to promote diversity and inclusiveness.

4) Understand and use professional jargon --> We’ll read articles on nursing and learn how to glean relevant professional lexis from the texts
