In Germany and globally, paid care work is often invisible, precarious, and relegated to migrantized and racialized women. In their professional practice, social workers frequently work with marginalized communities who often have access only to precarious forms of employment and carry a disproportionate burden of care work. At the same time, social work itself involves a substantial amount of care and affective labor. This seminar seeks to create a space for students to critically examine these dynamics through intersectional and decolonial perspectives. Students will have the chance to identify and articulate a research question of interest, explore appropriate methods to address it, and participate in field sessions. Field sessions offer students the opportunity to meet and interact with social work practitioners and social pedagogues involved in projects that intend to support women with migration experiences and migration biographies in navigating the German labor market. These experiences will be complemented by collaging sessions, where findings from the field are processed and presented creatively.

Assessment will be based on short presentations and a written reflection on students’ field experiences and learning outcomes. The primary language in this seminar will be English. However, students are welcome to express themselves and submit their written reflection papers in German, Portuguese, Romanian, or Spanish if they prefer.
