    • Take the quiz to test your knowledge and find out some new vocabulary learning tips before you start the module.

      Before we dive into the tips and tricks about learning vocabulary, let's take a look at some quotes about vocabulary to understand the importance of learning words. Then you will consider exactly what the quotes mean by doing a quiz.

    • Read these quotes by famous people about vocabulary.
    • Test your understanding of the quotes by choosing the best description for each.
    • What kind of learner are you?

      Generally speaking, there are three types of learners: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners.
      Here, you can take a quiz to find out what kind of learner you are.
      Then, you will find out some hints and tips about what your learner type can benefit from when learning vocabulary, as well as find out general information about each learner type.

    • Vocabulary recording methods

      Looking for some inspiration on how to record vocabulary you come across and want to learn? Check out these four methods.
      We recommend that you do the learner type quiz first so that you know which methods could be particularly useful to you.

    • First, let's read up on a simple method: having a notebook.
      You can practise afterwards by completing a quiz with a few example entries in a notebook.
    • Now let's learn about mindmaps.
      You can also see some examples of how you could structure your mindmap depending on the topic.
    • Next up, a short text about flashcards.
    • Last but not least, let's read up on sticky notes and ideas on where to put them.
    • What's in a word?

      Working out the meaning of a word without a dictionary. Is it possible?
      This section introduces you to exactly that and gives you a little quiz afterwards to test your skills.

    • This short video gives you a few tips on how to work out the meaning of a word by looking at the context (and not always rely on a dictionary).
    • Want to try for yourself? Take this quiz to see if you can work out the words from the context. Try not to use a dictionary!
    • Collocations

      Collocations are very important when learning new words. It can help you learn set phrases that are common in the language, rather than just learning individual words and then not knowing how to use them exactly.

    • So, what are collocations? Read this text to find out.
    • Let's look at some examples of collocations. Write down as many collocations as you can think of for each word and then click on the word to see some examples.
    • We're going to start with verb + noun collocations. Watch the video and then take the quiz to test your knowledge.
      You also have the video transcript if you want to read along at the same time.
    • You're getting the hang of this! Now we'll move over to verb + preposition collocations. Take a look at the examples and have a go at the quiz.
    • Phrasal Verbs

      Phrasal verbs in any language can be tricky. Take a look at this section to learn what phrasal verbs are and to practice a variety of English ones.

    • First, watch this video on phrasal verbs. You can also find the video transcript if you want to read along.
    • Before you continue onto the quizzes, carry out your own research by doing this small task.
    • Now have a go these two quizzes.
      The first asks you to match phrasal verbs with the correct definition.
      The second is a little trickier and asks you to complete the phrasal verbs. Good luck!
    • Let's consider a real-life situation with phrasal verbs.

    • Cognates & False Friends

      Cognates can be really helpful when learning new words in English, whereas false friends can be a bit pesky. This section introduces you to the cognates and false friends and gives you some examples of them.

    • First, let's look at cognates. Take a look at the flashcards and write down what the German translations of the words you see.
    • Read about cognates and then take a small quiz to see how your German can actually help you when learning English.
    • Unfortunately, it's not all that easy. Read up on false friends and then take a quiz on cognates and false friends. Can you work out which words are which?
