Collocations of the form verb + preposition are tricky, because there is no simple rule that makes them easy. In fact - just like a lot of things in languages - you have to learn these things by heart. Here are just a handful of examples (there are a lot more out there!):

to for on about with in
adapt to new circumstances apologise for being late agree on a decision think about the decision agree with a friend believe in God
belong to the team apply for a job concentrate on a task worry about the job cover with a sheet result in a profit
listen to music search for a website comment on an action forget about the milk deal with a problem succeed in learning English
refer to an email wait for the postman rely on a colleague care about somebody compare him with her participate in a race
