The content of this course is largely offered in English. However, students are welcome to participate in German and some German texts will also be referred to. the course will take place on Mondays from 14:15 - 17:30. This course focusses on social work as an international profession and using project/research based methods we will explore what 'professional social work' means in different countries, different perspectives on empowerment, Human Rights and Social Justice; as well as Indigenous social work. The course will invites you to critically consider these ideas in social work practice as well as consider new perspectives beyond the eurocentric framework. Students will be required to work in groups and develop questions at the beginning of the course, guided by the lecturer and present their answer/research to these questions.  The lecturer will support each group to develop critical ideas, look for resources and develop a robust piece of work. Students will be required to articulate this research as the final assignment of the course. The course will entail visit to atleast one organisation, as well as group work and presentation. 

Der Inhalt dieses Kurses wird größtenteils auf Englisch angeboten. Die Teilnehmer können jedoch gerne auf Deutsch teilnehmen und es wird auch auf einige deutsche Texte Bezug genommen. Der Kurs findet Montags von 14:15 - 17:30 Uhr statt. Dieser Kurs konzentriert sich auf die Sozialarbeit als internationale Profession. Mit Hilfe von projekt- und forschungsbasierten Methoden werden wir erforschen, was "professionelle Sozialarbeit" in verschiedenen Ländern bedeutet, unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf Empowerment, Menschenrechte und soziale Gerechtigkeit, sowie indigene Sozialarbeit. Der Kurs wird Sie dazu einladen, diese Ideen in der Praxis der Sozialarbeit kritisch zu betrachten und neue Perspektiven jenseits des eurozentrischen Rahmens in Betracht zu ziehen. Die Studierenden müssen in Gruppen arbeiten und zu Beginn des Kurses unter Anleitung des Dozenten Fragen entwickeln und ihre Antworten/Forschungen zu diesen Fragen präsentieren.  Der Dozent wird jede Gruppe dabei unterstützen, kritische Ideen zu entwickeln, nach Ressourcen zu suchen und eine solide Arbeit zu erstellen. Die Studierenden müssen diese Forschungsarbeit als Abschlussarbeit des Kurses abgeben. Der Kurs beinhaltet den Besuch von mindestens einer Organisation sowie Gruppenarbeit und Präsentation.  

In this course, we will explore different methods that social workers use across different levels to address issues of Rights, Justice, and Empowerment for their clients.

Three broad levels: Community, Group and Individual work will be considered in the module as well as different tools/methods that social workers can use in their work (including advocacy, community organising, disaster management, social work group, task centered practice, solution focussed methods, motivational interviewing, family and systems theory).

The course provides inputs on the various methods to enable students to familiarise themselves with the palette of different methods available. The course is not meant to develop skills for practice (which follows in the fifth semester with practice).
