Wait, what? Why is there a section on numbers in English? Aren't they just the same as in German?

Well, yes. And also no. There are slightly different rules when writing numbers in English. Here are the main problems German speakers tend to have:

  • You use a comma (,) to separate every three digits in a number. For example, the number "three million" would be 3,000,000. In German, you use full stops (3.000.000).
  • You use a full stop (.) for decimal places. For example, "three and a half" as a decimal is written as 3.5. In German, you use commas (3,5).
  • Currency signs appear before the number. So you would write things like £5,000 or €49.99. In German, you put the currency sign after the number (49,99€).
