In English, we can borrow something and we can lend something. They are two completely different things, and even native speakers get them mixed up sometimes!

Simply put, if you borrow something, it means that somebody gives it to you. If you lend something, it means you give it to someone.

Take a look at this image where the "something" in this case is some money.

So we could say:

You lend some money to a friend.
A friend borrows some money from you.
Both sentences mean the same thing. You give some money to a friend.
