OK, great. So we now know that there are a large number of words in English that look the same or very similar to a word you know in German.

Unfortunately, there is something that makes things a little difficult here. But I'm sure you are up to the challenge!

There are some words in English that look like words you know in German, but they actually mean something completely different. These are known as "false cognates", or more commonly as "false friends".

Have a look at these German sentences and their English translations for a few examples.

I have a gift for you.
Ich habe ein Geschenk für dich. (NOT: Gift  [= poison])

She is very sensible.
Sie ist sehr vernünftig. (NOT: sensibel  [= sensitive])

He was very irritated.
Er war sehr genervt. (NOT: irritiert  [= confused])
