There are a variety of collocation types, such as adjective + noun (fast train [not quick train]) and verb + adverb (wave frantically [not wave feverishly]).
Here are some examples of verb + noun collocations which often cause problems for learners of English:
- The word "mistake" is commonly found next to "make" (and not "do"). We make mistakes.
- The word "homework" is commonly found next to "do". We do homework.
- The word "money" can often be found next to verbs such as "spend", "save" and "donate". We spend money. We save money. We donate money.
- The word "party" is commonly found next to "throw" (and not "make"). We throw parties.
Because of this, it is useful to learn common collocations when learning new words. So, instead of simple learning the word "spend", try to learn it in collocations - "spend money", "spend time", etc.
