Informal Grammar - Contractions Part 1

The way we write often does not reflect the way we speak a language. When speaking casually, people shorten the words or expressions simply because it is much easier that way to say the words/ phrases quickly and with least effort. These expressions are often refered to as "colloquialisms", and should be avoided in most written communication.

I'm gonna call the head of the HR. (=going to)

Do we wanna schedule a teleconference with the new client? (= want to)

You hafta postpone the phone call with Mr Smith. (= have to)

Lemme in – it’s raining outside! (= let me)

You shoulda written to me yesterday – nothing can be done now. (= should have)

It is a sorta funny story: I was working in Rome at the time but could not speak any Italian… (= sort of)

This ain’t the book I wanted to rent out. (= is not, could also be: is not, are not, has not, have not)

The water in the pool is too cold. Get outta there! (= out of)

Sorry, I have another call. I’mma have to call you back. (= I am going to)

The new line of clothes needs a new marketing campaign cos it will be released under a new name. (= because)
