Designing or renovating and modernizing a single-family home is often one of the first tasks for aspiring architects. However, demographic change, the climate emergency and social inequalities are now posing problems for this type of housing and form of settlement. In this seminar, we will examine the historical development of single-family homes in Western industrialised nations by analysing case studies within their cultural, historical, and socio-political contexts. The aim is to understand how it came to dominate. Furthermore, we will critically discuss current approaches to the socio-ecological transformation of single-family housing developments.
