WB3E Representation
Techniques
Two-Dimensional
Architecture is primarily concerned with three dimensions. The
profession of the architect, however, produces mainly two-dimensional
representations and explanations of space. This seminar engages such two-dimensional
instantiations of space, consulting and exploring basic and more complex
drawings as the architect’s main means of communication. Simplification and
effectiveness will be our focus, coherence and memorability our goal. We will
dive into various media – drawings, collages, photographs – and use them to
analyse an object that we treat as if it was a piece of architecture. We will
also consolidated our two-dimensional production in a specifically designed
layout, communicating three-dimensional characteristics in two-dimensional form
as precisely as possible.
Personal Item
Please bring a personal item to bring to our first meeting on Monday 7th
April. If it is too large to bring, please provide photographs instead. The
item or object should firstly be of importance to you. It should furthermore be
sufficiently complex and consist of multiple elements, i.e. a pencil wouldn’t
qualify. Ideally your item should be – in some way, shape or form – related to
architecture, your studies, or life as a student of architecture.
Our weekly sessions will consist of a mixture of short lectures on
various representation-related topics and a lot of in-person desk critiques. We
will develop highly controlled two- and three-dimensional drawings, but also
engage in free-association-generated collages. Sessions will include the development
of colour-codes, material textures, functional layouts, as well as precise
presentation vocabulary.
